Part 2: Reasonable Expectations

Parental

  1. What is the general expectation about this?

    1. Public school - Rugby example

      2. STORY Steve Hall was an English teacher. He was beloved by some, but thought to be a bit wacky by others. He loved to kayak and hike and go on outdoor excursions. He had smoked pot with the kids at McCallie, so why shouldn’t he take them on overnight trips in the ocean? (that’s opinionated)

    3. Kayaking club

      1. What about extracurricular, unrelated to a school club

      2. Boy Scouts, for example. What are their permission slips like? They play with knives and fire.

    4. Industry

      2. My own research specific to kayaking: federal, state, local regulations in the USA (Nick here 1993, UK laws)?

        1. Federal law

        2. State, local law

        3. Continuing education? Certifications? What’s required?

        1. STORY HERE – Nick’s emails, expectations, givens. In the UK, but….you have some US docs/emails/PDFs, too.

        2. Do they have any culpability should something go wrong on a trip with a leader who’s “certified”?

          1. STORY Parents, kids, settlement, hush hush

      4. Trade journals, canoeing, kayaking industry

      5. Specific to leading minors
