Part 2: Reasonable Expectations
Parental
What is the general expectation about this?
Public school - Rugby example
Private school -
STORY Darlington example – wealthy, privileged parents just have expectations they would and should rightfully assume that their children are being taught or led by the best.
STORY Steve Hall was an English teacher. He was beloved by some, but thought to be a bit wacky by others. He loved to kayak and hike and go on outdoor excursions. He had smoked pot with the kids at McCallie, so why shouldn’t he take them on overnight trips in the ocean? (that’s opinionated)
Kayaking club
What about extracurricular, unrelated to a school club
Boy Scouts, for example. What are their permission slips like? They play with knives and fire.
Industry
STORY
My own research specific to kayaking: federal, state, local regulations in the USA (Nick here 1993, UK laws)?
Federal law
State, local law
Continuing education? Certifications? What’s required?
Industry standards/expectations/responsibility?
STORY HERE – Nick’s emails, expectations, givens. In the UK, but….you have some US docs/emails/PDFs, too.
Do they have any culpability should something go wrong on a trip with a leader who’s “certified”?
