The Woodthrush and Our Core Values
God is in the journey. Journey is such an overused word. As is process. But, it is valuable to know that it is where our true happiness lies. Not in the outcome. There are a slew of things online that tell us about successful people who sit with their accomplishment for a few minutes before thinking of their next project. The joy is in the process. The outcome doesn’t even matter to them.
The Internet is also overflowing with exercises that help us discover our Core Values. What makes us sing like this wood thrush.
In my opinion, nobody did this better than Danielle LaPorte. She has a website, a book, a complete course called The Desire Map and more around discovering (or rediscovering) your Core Values. She calls them Desired Feelings.
She asks, “How do you want to feel Sunday night?” (This probably resonates most with the Monday to Friday workers of the world.)
Just take 90 seconds to listen to this happiness!
I’ve linked my worksheet here, just as an example. (I created it in Microsoft Word using green thought bubbles for some reason.) I did this in 2019, but it still applies to me today and probably will for my duration.
Other places online that have workshops and worksheets to help you find your core values, your desired feelings, your song:
To quote Martina Navritolova, "The moment of victory is much too short to live for that and nothing else."
And if you’re a writer, Neil Gaiman said this about the love of the work itself: “Tomorrow may be hell, but today was a good writing day, and on the good writing days nothing else matters.”
